Put washers on the axles between the wheels and body, and use powdered graphite on the axle nails for less rolling resistance. Don't want the wheels too tight! Wayyyyy back in junior high, the wood shop classes did C02 rocket cars, but they had the 8th graders put the cars on the launcher and the person who put mine on didn't like me and I saw him deliberately squeeze the rear wheels tight against the body so it'd go really slow. :P I shoulda made sure to fill the bottoms of the holes in the wheels so they couldn't touch the body.

Well, it's been almost a year, so it's time to start preparing for this year's Pinewood Derby! I came up with a pretty nifty design this time, if I do say so myself. I drew it up in CATIA to make some plans from, and I was going to *try* to cut it myself using my meager tools, but one of my coworkers has a home-built CNC machine and offered to mill it out!![]() ![]() Please note that since he had to use an oversized piece of wood and not the standard block, this is not a legal entry, and is really only for show. Besides, this one is for myself! The only problem is, my son saw my design, and now he wants me to make him one, which means I'll have to do it (with his help, of course) using the provided block!

^ Actually, most of the fastest Pinewood Derby cars have all their weight at the back, since you start out with a higher potential kinetic energy that way. The weight limit is about 4 or 5 grams, so I'll probably hollow out some of the engine block to add weight back there.

Well, we had the derby this past Friday. My car turned out looking pretty good, although I was scrounging around to get the details finished. That and the clear finish kind of blurred the drawn-on details. My son actually changed his mind and we did a design of his own - a pencil! Good thing too, since neither car did very well in speed (I haven't figured out that secret yet), but my son did win first place for looks! Now he gets to take his car to the district Pinewood Derby in March.

| SFM Nugget | My son just placed 3rd (out of ten, only) with his pinewood derby car. He asked me if we could make it look like a trek shuttlecraft (what a coincidence, lol). He competed last Saturday. I did all the cutting with a scroll saw for the basic shape, but he did all the rasping, shaving, sanding, painting, and detailing. He had a blast! It's fun to see them have fun with this sort of thing. It's a perk for me that he wanted it trek-like. I also liked the Star Wars design shared above. We'll have to try that one next year! Thanks for sharing! |
