New Story Ideas

I have finally killed all my WIP Trek stories as I’ve reached the threshold of what I can take trek wise.

My new story is not a trek one, but a kind of proto-BSG, but i need help...

The basics:

After centuries of misuse by mankind, Earth has fifty years of life left, at which point the atmosphere will be gone. Earth needs to be evacuated, but there is little that can be done.

Here comes two options

1. the United Earth government sends four 'locator' starships to find a new Earth. If they find one within the fifty years, they will send a message back to Earth, who will then send eight 'Arks' which can hold 32,000 on each one. If they cant find one in 50 years, the Arks will head out to the current location of the locators

2. All the ships of UE leave together. They will only be able to hold 70,000 in total. They will stick together to find New Earth.

In any event, billions of people will be left on Earth to die (which will have a profound effect on one main character.)

I am seriously considering either option or wonder what you think would be best for a story.

BTW: No ship has ever left the Sol System and alien life has never been established. This means that the ships don’t know what they'll find (depending on what mood I’m in....)

Also, the story will be set on the UES Discovery (My Favourite name, if you hadn’t guessed), which will either be a 'locator' or a ship of the fleet.... (My avatar shows what Earth is currently like in the story, which is set in 2106.)

I also have to show profound love for Vicky Jenkins and Aimee Scott who are my co-creators. Vicky chose the name Lieutenant Ocean Rush for Discovery's Chief Engineer.

Invert the story.

Man has been to the stars. A number of far of systems have been colonised. They have ignored Earth for centuries and traded among themselves. Now a mission has been sent to find out what became of mans ancestoral home.

If you decide to go with this I hope you do the research in the sciences of what happens as we pollute the planet to death. IE higher storms due to temprature exchange (hurricanes incereasing etc) Jetstream breakdown, extreams in temps outside the equatorial regions. Radiation effects due to the atmosphere thinning. Gass of of the atmosphere.

Truth be told I doubt we as we are now could achive FTL before we kill the planet. Best bet is to rape the sol for resources to keep the air here viable. Since terraforming is impossible due to time constaints. Maybe work in some sort of global effot to stem current trends IE total ban on carbon based combustion. And work against any "green house gas" emissions then show in some other way we screw ourselfs through some screw up such as methane (or is that frozen hydrogen I forget) mining in the ocean breaking a huge hunk off and releasing it into the atmo causing a 100yr or 50yr end to global life?

Keep in mind as well over the life of the earth when there was life the air wasnt always freindly to us. IE time of the dinosaurs we would more than likely fall to the ground dead within a few min. Or lay on the groud gasping till something either ate us or stept on us. Something I have to laugh at when shows bring dinos to our timeline. The things would get stoned off the o2 then pass out.

The premise is close to other stories but if you focus on the charector dev it could work. Itll be intresting to see how you will work out how the population on earth reacts and deals with the mission.

Phew, that was a lot of info....

Okay, this is the thing......

The damage man did to Earth was at its height of World War III (2019-2020)
A new form of weapon was created, which had a side effect of destroying oxygen particles. By this time virutally all the rainforest had gone so there are not enough trees to replace the CO2 with O2.

Terraforming is still way off in this future and colonies cannot be constructed in time to house too many people. Also, people want to live on a planet, not in a ecodome.

Also, once Earth heals itself, (after a de-evolving to it's second atmsopheric state) people may return to Earth....

This has all been set as canon.

I need to know whether to have a full military fleet or a rag tag fleet. Me and the co-creators cant decide........

I would change the o2 killing weapon to some bacteria thats killing the alge in the ocean since he ocean is where most of our breathable o2 comes from the amazon is the largest landbased source. As well to destroy atomic bonds your talking a fission process o2 isnt a particle but a element.

In order to organise and develop the technologies you suggest a MAJOR power is needed to fund the project. EXP if its not known to the populace.

Ive written quite a few of these eco stories over the years. and watch WAY too much Nova and the like Oh id as well take a look at using gimp or photoshop to flood the earth with a earth map and a elevation image overlayed. This will give you ideas of places that will be viable to place the story. (would hurt to place it in NY when its under 100ft of water)

here is a sample of one I did for some trek pics as you can see most of the east coast is gone. As well as huge chunks of norther europe, not to mention a lack of southeast asia. This map was made with elevation maps only, I didnt touch up anything by hand. It is as accurate as the source maps which I think were 20K wide.

I recomend googling global warming and other science based theory based on pollution.

edit oh I didnt see that poll there. . . I say military if those are the options. Since organisation is the only way to do this with the tech level set to 2020 which would mean the team will have to develop some sort of FTL drive. Because 2020 as we sit now will only have ion drives IF that. Relising this might come across as being on your case. . >_> Im just trying to give tips from experience in writting very similar stories.

the algae idea is great

By this time, global warming is at its worst, the average temp is about 34 celcius, the only rain that falls is acidic.... etc.

I really dont want to get into the science bit too much, as we wont hear much about Earth after story 3....

Suffice it to say that mankind of age has the ability to live on a planet without polluting it in a negative fashion, but the Earth they inherited was dead before they were born. Actually, its dead already, we just havent realised our efforts are enough

oh and the story is set in 2106....
