Lightbulb pliz help me with a transition

hi.

im writing a story as well (still untitled)
well, i have all the ideas, a (kinda) framework (more like big stages of the evolution), a fonctional original universe, all the cool stuff.

my main character took unvolontarly the ship.
they are half living ships, and due to his natural abilities, he jumped from enlistedman to the emotion manager of the ship. (yes its very far in the future. half living ships have emotions. even love (this is a big stage further).)

problem is : he goes trough martial court, then prison.
but i dont want to stay long in prison, and i need a transitive element to bring him back in another ship.
and im out of good ideas.

(character was a shoplifter enlisted in the marine by force (choose army or prison). he has no friends, no army contact. due to his grade-jump, everybody hates him. he override the chain of command in the middle of a big battle they won. thanks to him or not, we dont know and they dont care. ships are controlled by mind, and fire emotion charged weapons. weaps are as well controled by mind and can change trajectories (a bit like SGA drones) )

if you want ill tell you later more of the background (as im in no mood for large translations)

Do you believe in Love?

Have one of the ships ask/request/demand him as its pilot/manager.
If the ships are living and have emotions, it's not a stretch that the ships are sentient as well. Set a situation where one of the ships feels it needs this particular person as its companion--and then make sure that the situation is one that's interesting for the reader, otherwise it will feel hacked.

History is an omelette. The eggs are already broken.

hehe, i already planed that for the return of victoria
(1st ship, first love. victoria will be killing her whole crew to make pression on the marine administration for him to come back a little later in the story)

(ships are indeed sentient, but are treated a bit like they werent. a bit like slaves. its a secondary storyline as well but i wont give a try to the revolution of the ships. thats not the aim of the story. the aim is more a kind of autobiography to help people understand why the hero made the choise between quality or number [of lifes]. yeah its a bit metaphysic too)

im only page 30, but i developed the whole thing in its interity.
