My first writing project (original)

A biast standpoint in time

OK, this is my first ever writing project, and I'll probably not even keep the title. Theres more to come, as I work on it. C&C would be very much appreciated.

The purpose of these records, these writings, are to preserve the memory of our great civilization. Or at least, so I’m told. Not to do so much as to record history, or list achievements, but to show whom we were; Our cultural identity, as a world, as a civilization of beings, and the events that led to our downfall.

I honestly don’t know why I’ve been chosen to write such things. Things that will shape how we are preserved, how we are remembered, and how we are discovered. Who would read such boring documents? I don’t know. But they must be written, nonetheless. Actually, I do, the historian sitting on the log across from me. He would look a lot more comfortable with a quill and parchment. Like most historians he’s a weedy little guy. Now that’s not meant to be a reflection on historians, its just an observation.

Perhaps I’m confusing him with an archaeologist. The differences are noticeable. An archaeologist seems to love the dirty work, the nitty gritty. A historian, aye, looking at him now I can see it, he would much rather be in a library. There aren’t any. That’s a shame. Sure, there must be some electronic copies somewhere, of some things. But there is only so much that can be transferred onto computers and hardrives. Only so much can be preserved in cold storage.

I wont pretend I can remember so much as to accurately re-record the history of this world, our civilization, and civilizations past, if any, nor am I educated enough to do it correctly, format and all. What I’ve been asked, instructed, to do, is write down what has happened, from the view of an everyday person, someone who lived and survived.

Survived. That’s all relative isn’t it? A matter of opinion. A point to be debated. For what is it that we have survived for? The future of our civilization? Our race? What future. Hell, why am I even writing this nonsense? I’m no scribe! I don’t’ enjoy writing. Maybe that’s the appeal of having someone like me record this stuff. So much has been lost, and no matter what I can save and preserve in here, it wont be enough, Too much will have been lost, and too many will never be remembered.

I’m not going to start off with the whole ‘We were a proud race’ nonsense. Because really, our actions are not one of a proud race of people. We did not act like the civilized people we pretend, nay, pretended to be. Far from it. We, well we were comfortable, if that makes sense. We lived in comfort, many of us had small luxuries, simply because we could. Do we really need heated floors, when we have socks? No. But we did, because we could. Why else?

Yes, we were a race obsessed with wealth, social status, and how our neighbours and friends perceived us. In a world where society ruled, we were all obsessed with our status in society.

yeah it has a 'voice over' narrative feel to it.
