The Broken Rim (Chapter 2)

The world New Tennesse hangs at the rim of the American colonies. One of america newest colonies it's less than 40 year old, now it's a battlefield, hundreds of the colonists find themselves fighting an enemy they cannot understand, or some say resist.

Energy bolts flashed through the air over the trenches, Willem stood and loosed a few bolts from his thermal bolt rifle the condensed and superheated metal flashing a bright orange against the night skies. "First squad, fall back, second squad provide cover fire." He called out to the militiamen with him, in poor order the second squad flashed fire towards the enemy as the first sprinted towards the next trench. They still didn't know who they were fighting.

Rickman turned his fighter back towards the line where the enemy were strafing the trenches with long tongues of fire the beam weapons far beyond anything he was issued. The belly of the fighter shuddered as a pair of missiles leapt toward the fray their auto-warheads moving to seek their own targets. Then it was on his, another fighter unlike any he'd ever seen, hard on his tail it flashed after him the dragon-like head glowing with crimson eyes and the body was that of a gargoyle, it's arms and legs were folded in as weapons mounted on it's shoulders lanced their beams at him, he dived in an effort to avoid the seeking fighter. This was not what their fighters looked like before, this was something new.
With a grunt he pulled up 20 feet from the ground and engaged afterburners.
It was on him then, quite literally, he could almost feel the gargoyles talons tearing the fragile wings of his superiority fighter with ease. He felt the fighter slam into the ground from the Gargoyles weight before a beam sliced the engines in half, they were between the trenches, despite the thick plexar glass window he could almost smell the dead. He climbed out of the cockpit hoping his plane didn't explode.
He turned in time to see the enemy vehicle standing there a tail extended behind it. Then a pair of missiles screamed from the sky and took it in the chest detonating within it's terrifying stone coloured body.

With a limp in his step Rickman began running for the American trenches.
