Star Trek: Earth-Kzin Wars

Ok, here's my attempt at some stories about the Earth-Kzin wars mentioned in the TAS episode "The Slaver Weapon." I will be doing my best to fit it all in with the established Star Trek timeline. I'm going to do one story for each of the four wars. And yes I will be sticking with the '200 years ago' comment made by Sulu in that episode.

This story is set in the mid-21st century a few years before WWIII. Please help me out with any spelling mistakes you see. I'll fix them as I go along. This is a WIP so previous work I've done may change as the story continues. I will update previous chapters as needed.

Enjoy.

Chapter One: The Silent Craft

October 3, 2040

The screen of Ian’s personal computer activated. He pressed a button on his split style keyboard. An image flashed on the screen.

A voice from the computer said, “Welcome to InterNex. Please enter your name and password.”

Ian typed in his username and password in a small text box on the screen. He pressed a button and another window opened on the screen. After pressing a few more buttons the screen changed to display a nexpage. The title of the page was Complete Guide to UFOs and Aliens. He browsed through the page. There was a featured article listed below the main introduction of the nexpage. The article read:

Photo From ‘60s UFO Cover-up. This photo was released through the aid of a military contact. In 1969 a strange blip showed up on the radars of several Air-Force bases across the United States. According to military officials the radar contact was simply a high altitude test balloon. This balloon suddenly ruptured and thus the contact was lost on radar. However it is known that an Air-Force base scrambled a fighter jet at that same time. Public records show that this fighter was piloted by the late Captain John Christopher(1931-2034). It is highly unlikely that the military would send a fighter jet to intercept a weather balloon.

According to our military contact, when Captain Christopher neared the contact, he didn’t see a balloon, but a large spacecraft. His fighter’s wing camera was able to take a few photographs before the UFO suddenly disappeared. Several years later during some record transfers at the military base our contact stumbled across the wing photographs and the reports of Captain Christopher and the other officers who saw the radar contact. Our military contact was able to take the best photo of the object and make copies a few pages of the records.

The above image is the same photo that was sent to me by the military contact. This is the UFO that was seen by Captain Christopher in 1969.

Ian looked at the image shown with the article. The image showed a blurry image of a strange UFO. The UFO consisted of a saucer with two cylindrical projections coming off the back.

That’s strange, Ian thought, I’ve never seen a UFO like that. One of Ian’s main interests was UFO. He was twenty-eight years old, and has been interested in UFOs since he was fourteen. He had written a book about UFOs but it hadn’t become a big hit.

The apartment Ian lived in was fairly small, but it suited his needs. It was uncluttered except for a pile of camping gear in one corner. He went camping every week with his buddies, and this week was going to be a special one.

Suddenly, Ian heard a knock on his door.

“Come in,” he shouted.

The door creaked open and Ian’s friend Mike entered the room. Mike average height with dark brown hair and green eyes.

“You ready yet,” asked Mike.

“Yeah, I’m just checking to see if there are any recent sightings,” Ian said entered another command on his computer.

The nexpage changed to one that was about recent UFO sightings around the infamous Area 51. There were a few entries for October 1st.

Ian turned around to look at Mike, “It looks like there have been a few sightings two days ago.”

“Good, maybe we’ll see something,” said Mike.

“We better,” replied Ian as if he was threatening the universe, “I’d hate to drive all the way out to Nevada, then camp there for a week and not see anything.”

Ian stood up and pressed another button on the keyboard.

The computer again spoke, “Thank you for using the InterNex. Have a nice day.”

Ian turned and grabbed two armfuls of camping gear and headed outside. Mike then grabbed the few remaining items and they both headed outside.

Outside the apartment the sky was grey with clouds. The apartment was surrounded by a small yard with green grass and a few trees. They walked toward the street that was just in front of Ian’s apartment. Hovering silently at the curb was Mike’s 2035 Ford Bronco.

Mike was an off roading fanatic. He even owned a few of the old wheeled vehicles. But the ting he loved about his hover truck was that laws requiring wheeled vehicles to stay on trails didn’t apply. Hover vehicles were allowed to roam freely on public land since they didn’t erode the ground, damage plant life, or emit dangerous exhaust. Even though the thrill of having your bones jarred against rugged rocks wasn’t as great, the thrill of going to unexplored places had replaced it.

Mike has made quite a number of modifications to his Bronco. He has installed some new anti-gravs to give it a lift. He had also put in some variable modulators to increase or decrease the rigidity of the hover effect. With increased rigidity he could get closer to the rough ride of wheeled vehicles.

Mike flipped open small panel cover on the back of the Bronco and pressed his index finger against a touch plate underneath A small green light came on and a series of button images appeared on the touch plate. He pressed the one labeled window down and the back window descended into the tailgate of the truck.

Ian and Mike put the camping gear into back of the Bronco. Ian turned to walk to the passenger side of the Bronco. He pulled a small remote control from his pocket. He pressed a button and heard the door to his apartment lock and a red light came on next to the door handle.

Mike pressed the button reading Window Up, and the window rose back out of the tailgate. He flipped the small cover closed and walked to the drivers side of the Bronco. They both got in and Mike pressed a control to start up the Bronco. A low hum could be heard as the main propulsion unit activated. A small screen lit up and Mike keyed in their destination:

New Las Vegas, Nevada

Mike pressed another button and the Bronco pulled out onto the empty street and started on it’s way to New Las Vegas.

The interior of the Bronco was built with curves and smooth flowing lines. It was nice yet rugged. In a few placed panels had been removed, exposing the mechanical parts underneath. The back had some mud spots from various other camping trips. And was filled the camping stuff, some support jacks, and various tools. The front drivers section of the Bronco was cleaner, except for the foot wells where there was some dried mud. There wasn’t an obvious steering wheel, this was because vehicles on main roads were controlled automatically.

Ian and mike settled in for the trip.

“I’ve never been to New L.V. before,” said Ian.

Mike looked at him and replied, “I’ve been there a few times. It’s not that amazing.”

The sun was setting over the mountains to the west. The sky was filled with bright oranges and reds. A fifty year old General Daniel Sears stepped out of his M10 LRV. The M10 was a wheeled light reconnaissance vehicle that was used by the United States Army. He stood up straight and straightened out his green uniform. The two armed guards, that where there to greet him, gave him a sharp salute. General Sears returned the salute before walking towards a camouflaged doorway that was attached to a nearby hill.

When he reached the door another guard opened it for him and he entered. Inside was a surprisingly large complex. He took a few more steps and came to a metal detector. He walked through the metal detector and heard a beep.

A voice came over a speaker, “Please continue, Sir.”

General Sears continued to another door. It slid open and he walked inside.

A young female scientist, Melissa Green was waiting for him inside.

“General Sears,” Melissa said, “Welcome, to the S4 facility.”

“Thank you,” replied General Sears.

The S4 facility was a very highly classified facility located in the base of a mountain just south of the infamous Groom Lake facility also known as area 51.

“Please follow me this way,” said Melissa as she turned to walk down a long corridor.

The whole facility was dimly lit with cement walls. There were a few scientists in lab coats walking around. Each was accompanied by one or two camouflaged security guards. The General continued to walk down the corridor. Just as he was about to reach the third door on the left and a guard opened the door for a scientist to exit. The General looked through the open door as he passed and saw the silvery surface of a disk shaped spacecraft.

He passed a few more doors until he finally reached one that has a large number 4 on it. His security escort opened the door and he and Melissa entered. Inside was a large hanger. A few bright lights did their best to light up the large hanger. There was a strong smell of metal in the air.

“Here it is,” said Melissa, as she pointed to the large spacecraft in the center of the hanger.

The craft was triangular in shape with rounded corners and edges. The back edge of the craft was made of some sort of translucent material, while the rest of the craft was shiny silver. The top of the craft wasn’t visible from the General’s view but he could see a shallow dome shape protruding from the underside of the craft.

“So this is the TR-6G,” said the General.

“Yes it is sir,” replied Melissa, “but we call it the Angel’s Hand.”

“Angel’s Hand,” asked the General.

“Yes sir,” replied Melissa, “If this ship makes it to another world with intelligent life, they may just consider it and the crew to be angels.”

“Hmm, I see,” said the General.

Melissa spoke up, “I’d like you meet our test pilot.”

She walked to the left of the craft where a landing ramp was extended.

“RICK,” she yelled into the open hatch at the top of the ramp.

Melissa walked to the left of the craft where a landing ramp was extended.

“RICK,” she yelled into the open hatch at the top of the ramp.

A few moments later a blonde haired man of about thirty leaned out of the hatch. He was dressed in a grey jumpsuit with a triangular emblem on his left shoulder.

“Yeah, Melissa,” asked the man.

“General Sears, would like to meet you,” said Melissa.

The man looked at the General and straightened up. He quickly walked down the ramp and approached the General. He immediately gave the General a salute.

“Sir,” said the man then he lowered his salute.

Melissa spoke up, “General Sears this is Captain Richard Leeson. He’s the chief pilot of the TR-6G.

“Captain,”General Sears said looking Captain Leeson in the eyes, “You are doing a wonderful thing for your country. This project while bring great advances to our national defense programs. It’s men like you that are willing to give up everything, and live in secrecy, that are the real heros of this nation. Your contributions to this project is greatly much appreciated.”

Captain Leeson exchanged glances with Melissa. She could see the here comes another speech, look in his eyes.

“Thank you, sir. I am honored to be part of this project,” Captain Leeson said.

The General looked pleased., but before a moment of silence could pass, he spoke up again, “Captain, according to your estimate when will the project be ready for faster-than-light interplanetary tests?”

Captain Leeson responded, “We have one more orbital test flight scheduled tomorrow before our interplanetary tests. Our interplanetary tests are will be in one week.”

“Good, I’ll be back here for the faster-than-light tests,” said the General, “I just wanted to come by and check the progress of our projects here. This facility has a great history of developing revolutionary technologies.”

“Yes, it does sir,” replied Captain Leeson, “If this second generation hyperdrive works. We will be able to better develop America’s foothold in outerspace.”

Captain Leeson often agreed and gave positive responses whenever asked about the projects they were working on, but somewhere deep down inside of him he hated what they were doing. He hated keeping these technologies secret from the public. He hated the secret weapons projects and the grotesque genetic engineering projects. But his duty to himself kept him from revealing anything about the projects he was working on. If he did end up saying anything, he knew forces beyond the American government would surely have him killed.

“Well, thank you for the update, Captain,” said the General, “I need check on some other things. I’ll be back in a week to watch the interplanetary tests.”

“It will be a pleasure to have you back in a week, sir,” Said Captain Leeson.

“I look forward to it,” replied General Sears.

They saluted each other and the General turned around and walked out of the door he had entered through earlier.

Captain Leeson turned to face Melissa, who has halfway lost in thought. She had not really been paying attention to what the general had been saying.

Captain Leeson spoke to Melissa, ”I really hate...” He looked at one of the military guards standing menacingly, listening to their conversation.

Melissa followed Captain Leesons line of sight and noticed the guard.

“I now Rick, I understand,” said Melissa, “But you’re a good pilot. You know this ship better than anyone else.”

“Thanks Melissa,” said Captain Leeson said with a slight smile, “I sometimes think you are the only reason I can stay sane in this place. I love working with this ship and these technologies, but...you know.”

“Yeah,” Melissa replied, “I know. Don’t worry. At least you have a job that you enjoy. Most people aren’t that fortunate.”

They stood there looking at each other for a moment. Nothing to say came to mind.

Captain Leeson spoke up, “Well, I need to get back to work. I need to get this ship ready for the flight tomorrow.”

“Ok, good luck,” said Melissa.

“Thanks, Hopefully you can stop by more often,” Captain Leeson replied.

“I’ll try,” Melissa said and she turned and walked out the door.

Captain Leeson walked back up the ramp and into the triangular craft.

“You have arrived at your destination city, Welcome to New Las Vegas” a computerized voice said.

“Ah, here we are,” said Mike.

The Bronco hovered quickly down the road. They passed a few old houses that looked as though they had been burned down. Ian looked out the window and saw a transparent green sign with illuminated lettering. The sign read:

New Las Vegas
Population: 2,530
Elevation: 1,895

The city of New Las Vegas was built on the ruins of old city of Las Vegas. The original city had been bombed out during the Eugenics wars. All that was left of the original city was a few burned ruins on the outskirts, and a few large craters where the new city had been built.

Ian spoke up, “Can you believe this city used to be huge, with hundreds of thousands of people?”

“Yeah, those old pictures are amazing, all the lights, and people,” said Mike, “It’s a good thing that only a few of our large cities got attacked during the war.”

Ian said while looking out the window, “I hope we never have a war like that again.”

Yes there is a link. Larry Niven wrote the story that was used for the TAS episode "The Slaver Weapon."
