| I finally have some more updates for you all. I bet you thought i had forgotten about this story eh. Well actually I've just been busy with other projects including starting my own business. But anyway I've put all of the story so far into the main article. So if you want to read up on what happened previously just go there. There are a few very minor changes but nothing that would change the story completly. I did add a better description of Jack Stiles. It's inserted into te spot where we very first meet him so if you want to read that it will help explain a little about what is in this update. I haven't checked for grammer or spelling to much so if you see anything just point it out and I'll fix it. Thanks. On to the story. Carl sat there for a moment and thought. He looked at the object. “Well judging by all out research this area I can tell you that it’s probably not from any of the occupants of the castle,” he said. He looked at Jack, “How deep into the mud was it?” “Just a few inches,” replied Jack. Carl slouched a bit in his chair and gave a sigh. “I just don’t know Jack,” he said, “ This is the strangest thing we’ve recovered from this dig. You know, with all these tours coming through here I bet it’s contamination.” “Contamination,” said Jack, “You mean one of the tourists threw it in the moat?” “I bet it’s from one of those off-world exchange students. But whatever it is, it’s probably not native to Earth and definitely not from time period we are researching here.” Jack pulled out the sensor tray and grabbed the ball. He rolled it around in his fingers. “So what your saying is that it’s just a little trinket some alien threw away?” “Yeah, pretty much,” said Carl. Jack sighed, he looked at the ball while he held it in his open hand. He closed his fist around the ball and looked backup at Carl. “Well thanks for your work, Carl. I need to get back to my house on Corina Two. We’re having a family get together and I need to get the house ready.” “Your welcome,” said Carl as he powered down the test equipment, “I guess I’ll see you in a few months.” “Yep, take care of the dig for me,” Jack said as he started towards the door of the tent. He exited the tent and started walking towards his own personal tent. The sun was about to set. Inside Jack’s tent, he had opened a suit case and was placing clothes and other personal items inside. His tent was small, cluttered, and dimly lit. There were medieval artifacts laid out on shelf units and data pads covering his desk. He grabbed a few data pads and placed them inside the suitcase. Then he pulled the strange ball out of his pocket and tossed it on the cot. It had been a strange day. I’ve never fallen down that slope before, he thought. “I guess I really am getting to old for this,” he said out loud. He grabbed a book off of a shelf and looked at it. He read the title and opened to the cover page. As he opened the book a picture fell out. He bent down and picked the picture up from off the floor. The picture was old and the image slightly faded. The edges were worn by time, but the memories it brought back were still fresh. The picture showed an attractive young woman in the arms of a much younger Jack Stiles. “Ellen,” Jack said reminiscently, “It looks like another family gathering that we will spend apart. I really miss you sweetheart.” He looked at the picture for a while before he reinserted the picture into the book and closed the cover. Then he gently placed the book in the suitcase. He looked around the room and checked to see if he had forgotten anything. He latched the suitcase, hefted it off his cot and headed for the door. As he reached the door... Jack. He paused at the door. Someone had called his name. But it was more like he felt his name being called. He slowly turned around to see who had called his name. But he saw no one. As he looked around the room his eyes were drawn to the glowing orb on his cot. He stared at the orb. The orb stared back at him. Was it really just some trinket, or was it something more...important? Jack walked closer to the orb. He slowly picked it up and put it in his pocket. Well maybe, I can give it to Jonathan for his birthday, he thought. He turn and exited his tent. The bridge turbo lift doors of the S.S. Enterprise opened and Captain Jonathan Stiles strode onto the bridge. The bridge was cramped but very functional. Up to eight officers worked on the bridge at any given time, including the captain. The bridge was cylindrical. There three work stations on the left wall with a helm console at the front-left of the bridge. A large round viewport was centered at the front of the bridge. On the right wall were two work stations and navigation station at the back right of the bridge. Commander David Chang, ship’s second in command and Chief Communications officer, was seated in the command chair at the center of the bridge. Commander chan was of oriental descent and in his mid thirties. He had an almost pale complexion with dark black hair. He turned around to see who had just come on to the bridge and when he saw it was the Captain he stood up. Captain Stiles walked toward the command chair. On his right, leaned over a large digital navigation table was the ships Chief Navigator, Lieutenant-Commander Charles Tucker. Tucker had blondish hair and was in his thirties. “Captain, we should be completing our last orbit of Imuhara Three-B shortly,” said Lt. Commander Tucker. “Very good,” replied Captain Stiles, “Prepare to depart for Imuhara Four.” “Aye, sir,” said Lt. Commander Tucker. Tucker began to made the course calculations to go to Imuhara four. The S.S. Enterprise was one of the United earth Space Probe Agency’s primary science vessels and was currently making a general survey of the Imuhara system. “Captain,” said Commander Chang, as he gave Captain Stiles a nod. Then se stepped to the side of the command chair. As Captain Stiles sat down he asked, “Is everything going well?” “Everything is going according to schedule, sir,” replied Chang, “General mapping of Imuhara Three-B is almost completed. Our surveys show a wide variety of plant and animal life. Our survey in this system should be completed in approximately eleven hours.” “That’s great to hear,” said Captain Stiles. Stiles looked out the round viewport at the front of the bridge and saw a beautiful green planet below them. But this planet was only a moon to the much larger gas giant Imuhara Three. Slowly Imuhara Three began to come into view from behind the planet they were orbiting now. The multitude of colors that made up the gas giant’s atmosphere was stunning. It was one of the most beautiful sights Captain Stiles had seen. The gas giant grew larger and larger until it filled the main viewport. A chirping sound was heard on the bridge and Commander Chang sat down at is Communication’s console. He placed his hand over the small earphone that was in his left ear. He paused for a moment and then spoke up. “Captain,” Chang said, “UESPA Command has just sent us advanced notice that we will be rendezvousing with the S.S. Mariner for a cargo transfer in approximately a month and a half.” “Very well, send our confirmation reply,” said Captain Stiles. I would take quite a while for Command to receive the reply. Stiles stood up and walked toward the main view port. He walked down a small set of steps on the right side of the bridge just before the viewport. On this lower level was the Helm control. He stood right in front of the viewport. And looked out at the amazing sight that was before him. The beautiful planetary bodies doing their intricate ballet. The same ballet they had done for billions of years and would continue to do for billions more. The vastness and beauty of space never ceased to amaze Captain Stiles. And this sight reminded him of the reason he joined UESPA. Ever since he was a young child he dreamed of seeing what in space. Earth seemed so small and cramped. “It’s very beautiful, isn’t it, sir,” said Lieutenant Somatra Maduri, the Chief Helm Officer. Bates was a about twenty-eight years old. She was a beautiful dark skinned woman from India. “Yes it is Lieutenant,” replied Captain Stiles, still looking out the viewport. Captain Stiles looked at Lieutenant Maduri, “Lieutenant, why did you join the space service?” Lieutenant Bates, looked up at Captain Stiles with her beautiful dark eyes. Then she looked out through the viewport at the beautiful scene. “I joined because I wanted to travel to distant planets,” she said, ”When I was younger my father owned his own space ship. We used to travel neighboring star systems.” She paused for a moment as the memories flooded back. Then she continued, “I first went to Vulcanis when I was only four years old. Our family has always loved space. I guess traveling among the stars reminds me of the times I spent with my family.” “It sound like you had a wonderful time when you were little,” said Captain Stiles. “Yeah, I did,” Maduri said. Captain Stiles leaned up against the railing that was across the edge of the bridge platform. “Our I’ve always had a good relationship with my family too.. We’re having a family get together soon,” Stiles said, “I won’t be able to go though, we’ll be at that cargo transfer with the S.S. Mariner that we just got orders for.” “Well I guess there’s always next time, sir,” said Maduri. “Yeah your right,” replied Stiles. “Captain,” Lt. Tucker said, “We are ready to leave orbit.” Captain Stiles turned around and stepped up onto the upper bridge level. He took a seat in his command chair. “Take us out of orbit and proceed to Imuhara Four, Mr. Tucker,” Captain Stiles ordered. A large starliner speed through darkness of space. It was a civilian ship. It’s three flat warp nacelles glowed yellow with power. The main hull of the ship was long and tall. The ship was painted a bright white and on the side was the giant logo of Carnival Starcruises, Inc. The function of this ship was dual purpose, it’s primary goal was to transport passengers to their destinations. It’s second purpose was to provide entertainment and other services to it’s passengers, some of which would be on board for month’s as the ship traveled the great vastness of space. Hundreds of windows lined the sides of the ship and behind each window was a passenger’s room. Standing at one of the windows was Jack Stiles. He looked out and watched the stars move slowly past him. It took Jack exactly three weeks to travel from Earth to his home on Corina Two. The ship traveled at approximately warp twelve which was one-hundred and ten times the speed of light. It was fast, but not as fast as most other Earth government ships. Jack turned away from the window and walk toward the center of his room. The room was small but brightly lit. Star and planet motifs decorated the room. A small bed was in one corner of the room and a desk with a sleek video screen was in the other. Jack had just re-packed his suitcase in preparation to disembark. He suddenly heard a squawk sound. And a voice over the intercom said, “The S.S. Carnival Nova will be arriving at the Corina star system in approximately twelve hours. All passengers to disembark on Corina Two please report to the primary docking entry at least one hour before arrival at Corina Two. Thank you.” Jack sat on his bed, now it was just the wait. Jack thought about going to see some of the interesting places on the ship, but he had seen them so many times before. All he wanted to do now was rest. He laid back on his bed and closed his eyes. The faint rumble of the ship’s engines was not very helpful to light sleeper but he slowly began to nod off. Suddenly a load bang rocked the ship. It was followed by another. Suddenly an alarm light came on in his room and a loud klaxon began to sound. Over the ships general alert system Jack heard, “Warning, all passengers please report to the ships theater located on deck five. All crew members report to their assigned positions. This ship has come under attack by an unknown assailant, please remain calm. This situation will be dealt with as efficiently as possible. I repeat, please remain calm.” Jack ran to the window and looked outside, he could see two fighter like ships firing particle weapons. The weapons were impacting on the light shielding of the starliner. Then out of the corner of his eye Jack could see a much larger ship closing fast on the starliner. On the bridge of the S.S. Carnival Nova the captain busy shouting orders. The bridge was filled with the noise of officer’s giving orders to crew members. “Captain shielding is down to thirty percent,” one of the officer’s shouted. “Divert power from the recreation areas to strengthen the shields,” the captain ordered. |
