The domain hasn't been stolen or hijacked - the domain name is actually just the textual manner in which you address a site. For use by the internet itself, it's changed to a dotted-decimal number which says exactly where the site is. The switch from a textual to a numeric address takes place is done by looking in something like an address book held by whoever you have the textual address registered with (hence why they are called registries). The registry that holds the information for SFM has lost it's accreditation (ie. permission from the lord and masters) to be a registry at all. As a result, whenever you type in any address that's registered with them, you get their default page (or something similar), rather than being redirected to SFM. This will be affecting far more websites that just SFM - taking into account the numbers of domain names involved with registries, probably tens of thousands. | |

Whenever I click on someone's name to see their profile, their avatar doesn't show up on the profile page, but I'm seeing them in the threads. This also happens when I use "named thread" links, like the one in my signature. Selecting that same thread from the 2D WIP list, the link shows up as "http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1528", but the avatars show up then. I don't know if this is related to the domain issues, but I don't remember noticing this before. I've also tried this from work and home, so it's not the computer. |
