Avatar observation

Not really a problem (as far as I can tell), but just something I noticed. I uploaded my avatar as a PNG with alpha transparency, and it got renamed to a GIF. The file is still the same size as the original PNG, and my browser still recognizes that the image is still a PNG, despite the filename saying otherwise. So, why the odd renaming?

I'm not sure . . . maybe it has to do with how the system stores the files

[edit] yeah that's what it is . . . all uploaded avatars are sent to the customavatars folder on the server and renamed etc . . .
I suppose it makes things easier for the database, and I assume that spaces in filenames would totallly wreck it, so they're renamed

the conversion to gif format does in some cases affect image quality, but it's hardly noticeable

Actually, the image itself was not converted, only renamed, hence the weirdness of it all. For example, my avatar has alpha transparency, which is only supported by the PNG format. The browser recognizes it as a PNG image, despite the filename saying GIF. My avatar in a tab by itself says in the titlebar "avatar92_5.gif (PNG Image, 133x82 pixels)".

*sigh*
Yes, GIFs can have transparency, but not alpha (or partial) transparency.

:edit: BTW biotech, your avatar shows up as a JPEG image type, but also has a GIF filename.

so, it works doesn't it, or is there a problem with things not showing up as you'd like? i mean don't knock it, we've only just gotten the headers to work.

Nah, like I said, there's not a problem that I've noticed. I just thought that some of the admins might like to know *exactly* what's going on with their system.

well they set it up so i'm pretty sure they do already. like backstept said it's probably just renamed for some bizarre technical reason.
