Thread revival suggestion

I've noticed a lot of people revive dead threads. Would it be possible to lock the thread at the creators permission or after a month or 2 and then if/when they want it reopened they can contact an admin or even have a password for it?

Some threads are legitimately revived, such as interest in a half finished project or people's whereabouts. But more general, "garbage" threads like "who's your favourite star wars character" or stuff like that can stay dead.

Current WIPS: None 'cause I'm a lazy bastard.

Personally, I don't have any problems when people resurrect threads. Someone using the search function, seeing a thread of a WIP he's interested in, and then he makes a comment on it. So what? There should be no problem with that, IMHO.

when it's just "UPDATE PLZ!!!??" after a couple months then that's just moronic.
we used to have a warning attached to the quick reply box for old threads, so people wouldn't have an excuse for necroposting and screaming for updates
maybe it also said something like 'PM the author instead'

This is possible and as a mod in the wip forum I encourage it. If a thread is going to be put on the back burner, and the original author wishes it to be closed feel free to P.M. a mod and we will lock it. It CAN EASILY be reopened later.

Locking and later unlocking a thread is indeed easier then going through and deleting necroposts, and alerting the posters.

it takes more recent work off the first page where it won't get noticed as much

if it's something genuinely useful then sure it's ok, but most of the time it's not, a PM to the author would do much better

I pity the fool!

Haven't thought about that. But at the end, I did mean of course useful replies to a thread. "UPDATES PLZ!!!?" is annoying as hell, but if it's together with new reference images, for example, it's a good thing.

I'm not for the idea of auto-locking threads. I've been to some sites that do it and it doesn't make the place feel like an open and friendly enviroment, yaknow? It feels as though someone is saying "This topic has been discussed as far as it can be and no one could possibly have anything more informative/interesting/useful to say on it".

As for requesting that your own thread be locked? By all means. If you are one of those who hate necro-posters then I highly recommend you approach one of the staff and get them to do it for you. It takes two seconds for one of us to do...
