People not using attatchments

I guess I am noticing this more because at work the IT department has blocked all hosting sites, like photobucket, imageshack, ect.

But more and more it seems in WIPS, after the first post to get a thumbnail, people just arent using the attatchment feature, meaning if there are other people in similar situations to me at work, we just cant see the images in the thread at all.

Got to admit I agree on the dislike of externals. I do attach images separately sometimes, but they are links to my own server that I have control of and I ensure that the link use thumbnails.

While I can see the links to places like photobucket and the like, additional features of those sites are a pain - including trying to run ActiveX controls, start up advertising windows and the like. We do provide attachment facilities for a reason, so I personally can't see why they should not be used.

No question is a stupid question if you don't know the answer - If you need help (and you can find us), ask the (Sens)A-Team.

When I link to images hosted at these sites, I make sure it's a direct link to the image so none of the extra features of these sites pop up.

I use Photobucket I use up a lot of my allocated space on the attachments. This would lead me to removing pictures form a thread I am working on.

By using Photobucket it saves me having to remove pic form the current thread. So when some one new to the thread come in a reads it form the start they are able to see each step of the design instead of the current version.

I know it a pain for those that can’t see the pic at work. I have also in the past use the attachments when a member that is following said thread can’t see the pic due to the block.

I have attached pics in all four of the threads in my sig, I just remove attatchments from threads that are no longer active, or have served their purpose.

With jpeg compression you should be able to host close a 1000 pictures here before you run out of space.

I feel your pain Biotech. But I also use photobucket images because I know (I hope) that those aren't going anywhere. Having said that (assuming I ever post any work again) perhaps I should get back in the habit of using attachments.

It's inconvenient to have to follow links to see a pic, but not terribly so.

What is more of an issue to me is when oversize pictures are put directly into the thread using [img] tags. I can't do anything while the images are loading because the posts jump all over the place while images download, resize, download, resize...

I hear you dude. That drives me up the wall too. I have yet to find the option in firefox that checks the size of the image before loading it and creates a place holder of that size on the page so that the space for the image is allocated prior to the image loading. I remember this being used way back in the days when we were using 33.6k modems...

As for attachments - I agree in a major dislike of most of those photo hosting sites.

Why do you use them? Is lack of available space here at SFM the primary motivator? Or are there other reasons...

I suppose speed could be an issue, on photobucket all you have to do is tick all the pictures you want, then one click generates all the links you need to paste in.

Of course the same page also gives you the option of smaller clickable thumbnails.

I use photobucket thumbnails... which are pretty much Ad free to view. The reason, SFM isn't the only site I post on so it is much easier to upload once and then link to it where needed. Plus I am almost out of space here.
