The venerable Electric Image Animation System has had a bit of a convoluted history. Last January, owner company EI Technology Group sold the EIAS IP to a new one formed by the then current developers of the software package and some of its most prominent users. They have unveiled a brand new website to promote the EIAS package, of which they are now the sole distributors and developers.
So there it is: www.eias3d.com
EIAS is a rather interesting beast: its main virtues are a REALLY FAST rendering engine with a really nice output, being able to gobble really large quantities of polys without a hiccup, and a certain simplicity and ease of use. It's biggest shortcoming is not including a modeler app. There are several ones around that directly open and save its .FAC object format (Bonzai3D, Form•Z, ViaCAD…), but usually one has to import the typical .3DSs, .OBJs and such (sometimes it gets to be a bit of a fight).
Even so, EIAS is the secret weapon of many motiongraphers, archvizers and VFX artists because of its speed, and has a great pedigree as the main app of ILM's Rebel Unit until a few years ago (they transitioned it to apps better suited to their current workflow). Certainly, EIAS won't tempt you out of your Mayas or 3DS Maxes, but it has its virtues, so just take a look at it.
