Its an Interdictor class .. it supposed to create a powerful gravity-well around any fleeing ship and prevent them from making a jump to hyperspace..

It's been around a lot longer than that, actually. As has this pic. The Interdictors were first introduced - to my knowledge - in Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy. They have appeared in a number of books and games since.

A good image - but the Interdictor breaks up the symmetry. (Had it pointed left, the image would have gotten a nine, instead of an eight.)
