False ... we now know materials to construct it (but it will be astronomical expensive) ... the diamant and the nano-tubes of carbone, are the only matrials that we know that can resist the high forces that are in play in a orbital elevator.
And if we construct one elevator, elevating cargo to space will be very cheap (we not need heavy rockects that uses around 80% of hid mass in fuel)
