U.S.S. Ingram - Not you daddy's Excelsior

This may actually be a bit of a tease. I knocked it out this far in my spare (heh heh heh) time a couple of months ago and haven't had time to get back to it. I will eventually, but my plate is pretty full at the moment.

This is the U.S.S. Ingram, a vessel drawn up by the fabulous Todd Guenther. It was his answer (rebelion?) to Star Trek III's Excelsior class. For those of you that weren't around in 1984, the immediate fan response to the Excelsior was largely less than favorable. Then they learned how to shoot the thing and make it look nice in TNG and then it became Sulu's ship in STVI and then it became a fan fave. But before all that, when it was still the Flying Bathtub, Todd sat down and wiggled it into a design more to his liking. More Robert Abel Associates and less ILM. I've always wanted to see the girl in 3D and find out how well she holds up. Pretty darn, I'd say.

Look ma! My first TMP Bridge!

Can you share your refs? I'd love to see the original design you're working from.

Sure thing. A sample of them are here: Star Trek LCARS Blueprint Database - Star Trek Blueprints: U.S.S. Excelsior Ingram Class Plans

That's awesome. I've been to that page many times (thanks to you giving me the link a while back) but I never looked at those particular plans. I was 5 in 1984, so I missed that thing about the Excelsior not being a fan fav. Anywho, great start and I look forward to seeing more.

OMG! I love this! I got the Ingram-Class plans way back when i was a kid, at my very first convention... in fact, I think they were the first 'Trek blueprints I ever got. I am so glad someone is doing this great ship in 3D. Great beginning!

Looking really nice Tallguy! I'm used to seeing you doing TOS and pre-TOS, now two, count them, two post-TOS projects!

Like Scifieric, I have to wonder what sort of wonderful animations this may be leading up to eventually! We can only hope!

Keep up with me at my BLOG

VERY COOL. i actually still have these plans in the original plastic envelope. i should dig em out. i actually thought about doing this ship also... but i figured i'd first try doing something original.

very cool start thus far. looks very accurate. One thing i did notice is the very tip of the secondary hull. It has a curvy slop to it wheres the plans it shows more of a hard edge. Is this going to be exact to the prints or are you planning some inovations of your own? either way i can't wait to see more of this. Also any ideas on color scheme? The ship was presumably in the excelsior era as i think the back story was something about the failed excelsior experiment and starfleet scrapped the design in favor of the Ingram. I would LOVE to see it with the colors of the excelsior. Just my thought.

Otherwise Super F**kin cool.

Oh yeah it looks cool. But I am really no fan of those far too small nacelles and the little portrusions at the sides. *shrugs* But that's just me. For the rest it's a fine model

Thanks everyone. I'll try to get back to modeling this before TOO long. scifieric, Forcemaster2000, the two projects (Surak and Ingram) are totally unrelated. In fact, this is something I started to blow off steam from my other projects (including the shuttle). That's right, I blow off steam from modeling by doing other modeling. I need help.

I'm trying to be as accurate to Todd's plans as I can be. ghanima, would you elaborate on the problem you see? This is also my first Trek model that has a major hull component built with sub-d, so I may be hitting a learning curve there.
