Interesting choice of challenge, I don't think I've ever really tackled a chair before.

I plan on making a ceiling supported, rotatable chair (who needs a floor :p). I'll update this post with the latest WIP image I have as I progress. Now all I need to do is come up with the shape...

Something like the command chair from the Lewis&Clarke? Good choice - I've tackled that one before.

Pardon my ignorance, but what show is the Lewis & Clarke from? I've never heard of it before :p

:D

TheGreatRaja

it's from Event Horizon

Zabiegly
15th Jun 2007, 16:45
Never heard of Lewis&Clarke either but your concept sounds intersting. Edit: Ah - Event Horizon, still need to watch that one.

Maybe have the chair surrounded by consoles 360°. So it makes sense having a rotating chair. With loads of screens and buttons and other techno-thingies to access.

Sphynx

Yep - the Lewis&Clarke was a long-range rescue ship from Event Horizon. Lawrence Fishburne was her captain, and it was his chair that hung from the ceiling in the control panel - a little like the shape of a 'hook'. The 'base' (if it can be called a base haning from the ceiling) was slightly hinged to absorb shocks, and could rotate around 360'.

@TheGreatRaja:
Event Horizon! I do know that ship, mind you it has been about 10 years since I last saw it, only watched it the once which is odd because I really liked it. Thanks for clearing that up Raja.

@Zabiegly:
We'll have to see what I can come up with, I had thought about the 360° screens but time will tell. ;)

Thanks Raja, I doubt I'll produce something as good as that but I'm not going to try any less...Time to get a few concepts off the ground methinks...

Ok here we go:

Concept 1:
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/1959/chairconcept1lr5.th.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chairconcept1lr5.jpg)

Concept 2:
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/3113/chairconcept2et6.th.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chairconcept2et6.jpg)

Concept 3:
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/8679/chairconcept3kg1.th.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chairconcept3kg1.jpg)

These are obviously extremely rough concepts, the final chair will most likely look like none of these as with most concept design stages but they give an idea of where I'm heading.

Those look cool . . I think I dig concept 2 the best. It keeps everything in your face.

Number 2 looks the most interesting, but the other two have better access and egress. Perhaps a combination of a near full surround but with easier access?

enigmaxs
15th Jun 2007, 18:38
When I first thought of the Ceiling Mounted Design, access was the most important aspect of the chair, I will be addressing that for sure.

:D

Zabiegly
15th Jun 2007, 18:47
I like the 2nd one best too.

Taking comments and my own personal favourite choice into consideration, I've opted to make a version of concept number 2. Here is the first WIP (of many more to come hopefully) render from my model:

That looks very nice, I know I'd like to work in that chair! Well, as long as I can put my arms on some supports in breaks :D

enigmaxs
15th Jun 2007, 19:39
Arm rests will be included (swively ones at that :P) but not until later on in the design phase, most probably just before I go into the detailing phase.

Added basic seat padding and extra control panels.

Definitely an improvement, I'm quite liking this one! :)

I think what you need to do is make sure that the centre of gravity is about equal, for the weight of the user, or else you're going to stress the bearing. Possibly making it a little adjustable (maybe computer controlled, with pistons moving the position a little? That in turn could be cool, as it could be used for shock absorbing, which is one of the strengths of this type of design.

You may want the console to be moveable, and perhaps have it mounted on the arms, so that they swing in, encasing the user (so he doesn't fly out of the thing!) conceptually I just like the upside down question mark as a form :D

Zabiegly
16th Jun 2007, 14:32
Looks a lot better with the cusions now. This one really screams for some heavy greebling, pipes and hoses

enigmaxs
16th Jun 2007, 16:30
conceptually I just like the upside down question mark as a form :D

Ahh! You noticed that then? :P

@Zabiegly:

Yeah, I'm getting that greebling feeling...not sure about pipes and hoses (not my strong point) but we'll see.

Zabiegly
16th Jun 2007, 18:16
Will there be pedals on the footrest? brake/accelerate

enigmaxs
17th Jun 2007, 13:12
Yup, but the pedals will be for turning the chair. This chair is more of a science/tactical station than a helm station.

Somehow this chair strikes me as something that'd be on one of the matrix hovercrafts, don't know why. Eagerly waiting for tubes :)

Sorry for the delay on this project, my PC decided to stick it's head up its butt and suffocated itself, so I'm in the middle of re-installing XP and all my applications again *sob* but I should be able to get back up and running soon. In the mean time here's where I was up to before the crash:

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/1517/chairwiprender60090qd6.th.jpg (http://img116.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chairwiprender60090qd6.jpg)

I added a ball joint to the rotation mechanism and the directional foot pedals.

Bleh that's annoying! Have you tried the 'last known good' options at boot time, to see if you can recover from the latest barf, I've had that be successful in the past?

enigmaxs
20th Jun 2007, 17:49
Yup tried and failed. Never mind what's done is done, on the bright side I now have a faster PC, heh heh.

My computer still glitchy as hell, even after putting in a new hard drive. i feel like it It could go belly up at any minute. The only nitpick I have is that the line of sight is being blocked by the bracket that holds the monitor and controls. Just a suggestion, but I might try getting rid of the middle bracket and moving the outer ones further apart. Otherwise, I think the design looks great.

Updated #5:

Finally fixed my PC errors and I had a bit of catching up to do so here are current WIPs of my Chair:

* Added More Viewing Screens
* Added ceiling attachment
* Updated screens
* Updated control panels
* Added Rotatable armrests

Close-up of Armrests:

There is a reason for that as you'll see in the next WIP. The user of this chair won't need line of sight...;)

Nice work.

Out of interest, just how high off the floor will this thing be?

enigmaxs
23rd Jun 2007, 15:54
Funny you should say that, I was just thinking about that myself. I'll add a floor panel to it too in the next WIP hopefully, if not then definately in the finished article.

:D

biotech
23rd Jun 2007, 16:21
Floor panel?

Too bad, I was hoping the chair was over a pool where sharks have friking lazers attached to their heads. :)

Good incentive to work well at their posts.

tobian
23rd Jun 2007, 22:05
Looking much better! I kind of imagine this being in a large multitiered space, where you hang over a void, but you just turn the chair round 180 degrees to step off onto a balcony :D

What sort of surfacing are you gonna do?

Updated #6:

* Added More Viewing Screens
* Updated Seat Cushions
* Added extra detailing to various parts

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/6301/chairwiprender80090gi4.th.jpg (http://img375.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chairwiprender80090gi4.jpg)

What sort of surfacing are you gonna do?

I assume you mean with the texturing, I'll be going for a Brown, Bronze, copper feel. It makes a change from that silvery metallic look that seems to be the norm.

very nice bro! cant say there is much to crit on

tobian
25th Jun 2007, 22:01
Well by surfacing I mean surfacing... adding shading effects, textures, colour and any other goodies to give it that 'look' :) Surfacing should make this look really good, though maybe add some champhers to the hard edges, to catch specular highlights?

Looks excellent, though you may want to change the outer 'thin' monitors as it just looks like you've squashed them horizontally.

Updated #7:

* Added upper fixture
* Added extra detailing to ceiling attachment

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/8132/chairwiprender90090hv5.th.jpg (http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chairwiprender90090hv5.jpg)

I think this is pretty much the final look. I don't think I really have the time to go any further, so I'll crack on with the texturing now and that should be my entry done and dusted.

:D

tobian
26th Jun 2007, 22:06
Awesome, I'm loving the upper fixture greebles! :) and yes, you need to get those textures on! :)

enigmaxs
28th Jun 2007, 14:51
Well this is the final look. I'm not too good with texturing but I gave it a shot:

Well it was fun, frustrating and ultimately headache inducing at times but I got through it in the end...*grins*

Looks excellent! The display screens are pretty cool, and the materials are prety nice, especially with the background object in place!

The only thing I'd suggest, if you can, enable ambient occlusion, to add a little shadow in the recesses, to sell the design!

enigmaxs
28th Jun 2007, 22:55
Ok I lied this is my last update (if it doesn't look right now it never will, hehe heh). Here is the model with Ambient Occlusion on:
