Switching from Lightwave to Max

OMG . . . . help . . .
ok so here is the deal . . . . The 3D boom is about to hit Montreal in a big way, . . . Good for me . . . . Bad for me.
Good for me beause I have a chance to do some good work . . . Bad for me 'cause unfortunately Montreal is a 3d Max kinda town, and I am a die hard Lightwaver.

So without saying . . . . I need to learn 3D Max if I want to get in on the party. . . . I have like 2 Months Max (no pun ) to get to a reasonable level were I can walk into ubisoft and feel comfortable about my skills. Sure I can show all the rockin Lightwave stuff I have done, but the hard line is I need to produce in Max.

Does anyone here have an idea of how hard this transition would be? has anyone done it . . . I am sure there are a few SFM'ers out there who have made the change . . . tell me of your experience with the move.

on the upside to that, you can try and find a studio that uses LW, and you'll probably have less competition for the job if the place is so full of maxers like you say

it'll be a pretty tricky switch from LW to max, some things you'll love, and the rest you'll probably hate

I pity the fool!

you've got a good grasp of the various modeling techniques that work in just about all the programs out there, the big thing will be to figure out how to do what you already know how to do, but do it the Max way . . . did that make sense?

that probbably didn't help at all

^^^^ What al said. Haven't heard good things from Ubisoft at all...or EA for that matter. If possible, I'd avoid them and try to get a better job somewhere else.

As for the switch, I have a very limited experience of LW, so I can't really help. I can say that I had a very hard time trying to make anything in LW after a few years of 3ds max. I dunno if the other way around would be the same.

If you're set on learning it go to Learning @ Your Own Pace® - lynda.com. For $25 a month (and you can do just 1 month) you get a decent video course on how to use Max 6 and 9. If you have the skills all you need is where the tools are and how they work in relation to LW. Otherwise you can google tuts and get the same ones over and over and half of them suck...

edit: this isn't an ad for them, I just had good luck with them...

totally helped . . . and you are right. That's what I pretty much figured.
As long as I grasp some of the techniques the switch should be a matter of association. I was just wondering if the modes of using the software were completely different from Lightwave.

you know I have thought about that . . . on the chance that everyone will be jumping their current ship to climb aboard Ubsoft and Eidos, but the reality is here in Montreal, not to many houses use LW . . . if any.
so I would be still looking at learning the software. . . .

I just want to do 3D . . . . get better at it and who knows . . . maybe make a couple of dollars while I am at it . . .

Sounds like something you'll end up hating if you have to work in those conditions mate.

Ten minutes of working like a battery chicken and I'm outta there, there isn't enough moola in the galaxy to keep me couped up like that!
